Xenophon Pierce Wilfley was a Senator from Missouri for the summer of 1918. What happened was the serving Senator died in office and the Governor appointed Xenophon Pierce Wilfley to serve out the balance of the term, saying to himself, I conjecture, “I can think of no one better suited to represent the great state of Missouri in the United States Senate than Xenophon Pierce Wilfley.” Xenophon Pierce Wilfley, who attempted to win his party’s primary in the subsequent election but lost to another candidate who then lost in the general election, was the younger brother of Lebbeus Redman Wilfley.
